DrawingMissCarey-closeup by LucaTedde DrawingMissCarey-closeup by LucaTedde
Ok, ok, I know this Mariah Carey's WIP is getting "boring" and many of you might say "c'mon Luca stop posting WIPs and finish this one in a couple of hours!" but it's not that easy.

I've decided to post a "close-up" for two main reasons:
1. I think you are a bit bored of seeing steps about the whole portrait while I'm working just on a small area of it at a time;
2. I wanted to let you know why it's taking ages to finish this portrait: I'm struggling with hair! LOL That comes along with the fact that I don't have time to draw recently but a few minutes (that rarely become an hour) on saturdays or sundays.

Thanks a lot for your visit, as always.

* Derwent graphite pencils (from 3H to 5B)
* Staedtler Clutch pencils (HB and 2B leads)
* Faber-Castell black watercolor pencil
* Arches hot-press watercolor paper

Can I ask, how did u do the hair? Using pencils? Wat about those streaks that look white? Did u lift it out using eraser or u drew using white colored pencil or smthg?! It's so detailed n I'm really amazed n puzzled over how u did the hair!

I've used a combination of a technique called "negative drawing" (which means to draw around objects instead of drawing objects) and lifting up graphite with an electrical eraser or kneaded eraser/blu-tack.
The white is obtained preserving the white of the paper drawing just "around it". If it gets dirty, I clean it with an electrical eraser (it's a battery operated eraser) or some blu-tack (a re-usable adhesive made by Bostick)

Wow. I've never heard of an electrical eraser b4. Haha. We learn new things everyday. But ur lines for the hair look so fine. Is that done with mechanical pencils? >___< Sorry I have so many questions.

That is incredible... I don't think i can see anything that would betray it as pencil work, it's practically a photograph! Nice job!

I don't sense any bit of struggle what so ever in that hair. Its coming out amazing. May I ask how large this portion of the drawing is and how large the entire piece of paper that you're doing it on is?

Everything about your drawings are amazing, so I can't point out specific areas that I like the most like I do with most people. The hair, the eyes, the perfectly curved soft texture of the face...it aws me.

This portion is about 13x15cm (5"x6") and the whole portrait is done on 31x41cm (12"x16") paper (but leaving a bit of white around.

Thanks a lot for your comment, it really means a lot to me. I hope I'll finish this portrait within this month. :)
